A Very Canadian Tat-a-long 2024 Day 3

 Happy Canada Day!!!!

I just want to let you know that I've been giggling to myself over this pattern.  I can't find a picture but there are often Canada Day Hats where the top is a maple leaf, its kinda felt like and its kinda like the "cat in the hat" hat.  That's kinda what this gnome is wearing.  I couldn't get my hands on a letter C bead this weekend but I'm planning on making a few gnomes with a C going between the 2 large SCMRs in the hat.  In the bottom picture the SCMRs in the beard are 2 p 2 and  I added braids to the picots.   Like I said I am having a lot of fun with this pattern.

Terms

R- ring

rw- reverse work.  I will only note this in situations where you don’t normally reverse work

SLT- shoe lace trick

CTM- continuous thread method, do not cut thread between ball and shuttle

+ join (where to join is indicated in brackets)

tw- turn work, to tat back in the direction you just came from you will turn the tatting like a page in a book

 

Materials

Shuttle or needle

Red, grey and a skin toned thread are needed

 

Wind 1.5 yards of red thread on shuttle CTM.  Needle tatters normal tail

Please note you will be joining to the opposite side of the day 1 motif

C             10 join to base of R1.  Cut and hide ends

You are done with the red thread

Wind 1/2 yard of grey thread on a shuttle CTM with ball.  Needle tatters will change thread on their needle

You will also need to have the skin-coloured thread on a shuttle or needle handy

 

Lock Join to the base of R6

C             6 vsp 6

Set down the grey thread and pick up the shuttle with the skin-coloured thread

R            6 +(base of R7) 6 vsp 6  before you close the ring pass the shuttle with grey thread through the ring.  This will join the ring to the chain. 

You are now done with the skin-colored thread.  I hide my ends in the next chain

C             4 vsp 4 vsp 4 lj (p on skin colored ring) 6 vsp 6 lj (to base of R8)

C             tw slt  8 lj (last vsp made) 6

A Very Canadian Tat-a-long 2024

 Hi everyone!

Every year I do a quick tat-a-long for the days leading up to Canada Day.   I have been doing this since 2018 and every year it it seems to work out.  The project is not meant to tat you all day to tat and is just a fun quick project.  There will still be plenty of time to go watch fireworks and parades.  The Canada Day Tat-a-long will be followed by a 4th of July Tat-a-long.  This will occur over the days leading up to the 4th.  I hope you enjoy these projects!

Repeat from * to * 2 times to make 4 rings and 4 chains.  Join the last chain to the beginning, tie and cut.

Make 1 motif.

For tomorrow you will need red thread.

A Very Canadian Tat-a-long 202 Day 1

Hi Everyone,

Its that time of year again!  

I am holding the Very Canadian Tat-a-long starting today.  It will be followed by the 4th of July Tat-a-long.  The files will be available on the Fringe Element Tatters, Just Tatting, Friends of Tatting Corner and the Needle Tatting: For Beginners Group on Facebook.

For A Very Canadian Tat-a-long you will need size 20 Lizbeth thread in yellow, brown (or grey or blue) and red.  Size 10 clear beads, a bangle, and a 5/8 plastic cabone ring.

For the 4th of July Tat-a-long you will need suze 20 thread in red, white and blue.  Size 10 beads in white, black and red.

If you have other sized threads you will need to fiddles a bit with the beads.

Day 1

Materials:

Size 20 Lizbeth in red, yellow and brown (could also be blue or grey)

Size 10 clear beads

Bangle

5/8 inch plastic cabone ring

 

Terms

C- chain

R- ring

vsp- very small picot

W- make double stitiches around the cabone ring.  Jane Eborall has a great tutorial for shuttle tatters on her technique page

For needle tatters I recommend tatsaway.blogspot.com, she has a tutorial on the blog.  There are also excellent Youtube videos

Start with the 5/8 inch plastic cabone ring

Repeat from * to * until you have 12 rings

Hide end

Needle tatters-  I think its probably easiest to make true rings with this kind of pattern. 

Shuttle Tatters-  you do not reverse work between the wraps and the rings.

For tomorrow shuttle tatters will need to have 2 yards of red thread wound on a shuttle CTM with the ball.

If you are a needle tatter you will thread your needle with your usual length of tail...using red thread of course!  Use the size of needle that works best for you.

Just a word for needle tatters, we will be using lock joins.  Many needle tatters often just pass their needle through the picot when they see a lock join. It is my recommendation that you don't do that.  The secondary benefit of a lock join is to stabilize the core tension so that one yank doesn't pull things all to @#!$@.

*****For those who don't know, CTM stands for continuous thread method which just means don't cut the thread between the shuttle and ball.

A very Canadian Tat-Along!

Its almost Canada Day and to celebrate I'm doing a very simple tat along.  This tat along is open to both beginers and experienced tatters.  It will start on Friday June 29th and will finish July 1st.  
This pattern will inlcude rings, chains, lock joins and self closing mock rings. 
Colour of thread needed is red and white.
Tools: 1 shuttle or needle and crochet hook.  (Bonus pattern involves a brass ring or bangle.)
