As indicated in the title I purchased a kindle (e-reader) and absolutely love it! Its so much easier to read and I never would have believed it until I tried it. Unfortunately I hit a glitch when I found out its the only e-reader that's not compatible with e-books our local library carries. So I'm very sad- that's the main reason I got it. I talked to a few people and there's a way around this issue. Basically I have to download to my computer first and then convert the books. So I'm going to try a few things.
I was also told that many books are available for free if you find the right site. I'm not talking about the ones that are in the public domain either. Apparently new books can be found. I'm not comfortable with doing that, I expect to get paid when I work and I think that writers and publishers should get paid for their work. Project Gutenberg is a site that shares books that are in the public domain. So there's lots of opportunity for free reading without hurting modern day writers.
The other thing I really like about the kindle is that books aren't taking up space in my house. Its all in one little container and available anywhere I take my kindle. No commitments to reading just one book!
Just one question though, will this be the end of the bookmark?
To answer your question - I hope it won't be the 'death' of the bookmark!!!! I have an ipad with the kindle app installed but our library here in the UK also doesn't let me read either in the kindle app or through itunes. BUMMER. I'll find a way round it too - one day!!!!
ReplyDeleteDespite the fact that I am a Kindle owner/lover, I still tat bookmarks. I do have a hard time keeping them in place on my Kindle, though. ; )
ReplyDeleteOf course it is not the end of bookmarks!!!! But I own a Nook e-reader. And I do love it and i seem to read much more since I got it.
ReplyDeletenah....I can't read much online so I will always use books. I tend to stick bookmarks marking pages in my tatting book for my favorite patterns too.
ReplyDeleteInteresting... I have been eyeing those things since my SIL got one. I didn't know about the library e-book scenario though...
ReplyDeletePretty little anachronism you have there!
Fox : )
Speaking of bookmarks. That is a lovely bookmark.
ReplyDeleteBaen has some titles available for free (my favorite being the Vorkosigan series, if you enjoy scifi). I really like their stance on making titles available gratis, and you can read it here-> http://www.baen.com/library/
ReplyDeleteAre you able to download pdfs of tatting patterns onto your Kindle?
That is a very good question. I really think that some books will remain in paper form for many, many years. I really enjoy technology, but I see some drawbacks to it. A bad ice storm left our home without power for several days one winter not many years ago. I could enjoy a good printed book by day and by candlelight during the long power outage. Electronic devices ran out of power without the ability to recharge.
ReplyDeleteWash your mouth out!!! - Bookmarks will always be needed, and yours is a particularly pretty one!
ReplyDeleteNooooo! I certainly hope bookmarks will stay alive :)
ReplyDeleteI have been considering a Nook for that library compatibility reason. Such great technology, however, can never replace that feel and smell of a nice book! (It's almost funny to think about curling up by a fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book on an e-reader.)
I hope not, I enjoy making and using bookmarks. Yours is very lovely.
