A Very Canadian Tat-a-long 2024 Day 3

 Happy Canada Day!!!!

I just want to let you know that I've been giggling to myself over this pattern.  I can't find a picture but there are often Canada Day Hats where the top is a maple leaf, its kinda felt like and its kinda like the "cat in the hat" hat.  That's kinda what this gnome is wearing.  I couldn't get my hands on a letter C bead this weekend but I'm planning on making a few gnomes with a C going between the 2 large SCMRs in the hat.  In the bottom picture the SCMRs in the beard are 2 p 2 and  I added braids to the picots.   Like I said I am having a lot of fun with this pattern.

Wind 1/2 yard of grey thread on a shuttle CTM with ball.  Needle tatters will change thread on their needle

You will also need to have the skin-coloured thread on a shuttle or needle handy

 

Lock Join to the base of R6

Set down the grey thread and pick up the shuttle with the skin-coloured thread

R            6 +(base of R7) 6 vsp 6  before you close the ring pass the shuttle with grey thread through the ring.  This will join the ring to the chain. 

You are now done with the skin-colored thread.  I hide my ends in the next chain

 Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

To celebrate fall and Thanksgiving I have a little pattern for you.  There is a pumpkin patch version to come later.  I just have to hide the ends before sharing it with you!  

The pattern is called Quaker Pumpkin and is inspire by a cross stitch pattern by Liz Mathews.  Please let me know if there is any additional information that you think the pattern needs or if there is something missing.

Stumpy Corn Cob

A few years ago I was tatting a lot of the Stumpy bookmark by Kersti Anear. This is a classic pattern and strangely enough it was the first time I tatted it. I used Kerry Solomon's Hand dyed and thread the combo of the thread with pattern reminded me of a corn cob. I started to fiddle around to see if I could add a husk to the pattern to make it look more like a corn cob. I think I was sucessful. It sat for awhile and finally in August I asked Kersti If it was ok to share the addition to the pattern. Kersti immediately said yes. Its taken me a couple of months fiddling around but I finally have a usable pattern. There is no advanced techniques in this project other than a slt and do not reverse work. (other versions were more complicated)

Orange Shirt Day 2021/ National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Hi everyone, it's Orange Shirt Day in Canada.  I've added a link so you can learn about why Orange shirts, Residential Schools and what they represent.   In the summer I posted a pattern to highlight the Orange Shirt and the living history it represents.  This is the link to the pattern Every Child Matters .  I invite you to spend a few moments educating yourself about the Residential Schools and the consequences for the survivors and descendants.

I wish I was at Palmetto tatdays 2021!

This weekend is the Palmetto Tatdays and I'm stuck at home.  If you don't know what Tatdays to are then go check out the Palmetto tatting Guild's website.  All is explained there.  Basically Tatters congregate from all over to take classes, tat and talk tatting.  There are amazing teachers and vendors.  Lots of fun is had.  

Every year I send a pattern and kit down for the welcome bags.  I also share the same pattern here so that those of use that are missing out can feel the excitement of tatting something new.  This year's pattern is the Winding Road Motif.  Believe it or not it starts at the small ring at the bottom of the picture and winds around finally ending where it began.  I hope to have a tutorial this weekend available on YouTube.

This year the Very Canadian Tat-a-long be done a day early. The last 2 months Canada has been grappling with the discovery of mass graves of First Nation Children at Indian Residential Schools. The number has increased over the month of June and is now in the 1000s. In light of these discoveries I will be posting June 29 and June 30 but will not post a pattern on July 1/2021, Canada Day. The pattern this year is aimed at highlighting Orange Shirt Day (September 30th). Make a lock join by using a crochet hook to pull shuttle thread through the joining space. This creates a loop and you pass the shuttle through the loop then tighten to remove excess thread. In these patterns a lock join is often joined to the space between chains. Where to do the lj is indicated in brackets. There's only a few more days until St Patrick's Day but I have at least one more pattern to share.   For this project I broke out a second shuttle to make the floating rings.   I prefer to work shuttle and ball but needs must.  For needle tatters I suggest that you use Bonnie Swank's needle tatting technique for the floating rings.  Beware that the sides are not all the same and you need to pay attention when joining the 2 squares together.  Otherwise you'll end up like me pulling out an entire side.

 Materials:

1 shuttle

1.5 yard of size 20 thread for skirt

½ yard of size 20 thread for wings

6mm bead for head

 Jingle bell (1/2 inch approximately)

1.  Make motif in diagram leaving a long tail of thread

2. Tat one pair of angle wings. 

3.  To assemble pull the skirt thread down through the top of the bell

4.  Pull the thread up through the 6mm head bead.  

5. Tie wings on between the 6mm head bead and the skirt.

5.  Make a hanger by tying knot in loop near the bead large enough it doesn’t slip back through the bead.

One of the other patterns to come out of last year's advent is this cute but irreverent pattern.  If you aren't interested in making an "F" bomb it can also be done in bright colours to be an ornament.   Hopefully I'll share a picture version that is more like an ornament tomorrow.

Advent Christmas Tree

I made this Christmas tree last year when I did my thread Advent Calendar using the skeins of thread I'd purchased over the years but hadn't used yet.  Each day I would open the drawer in the calendar, take out the skein of hand-dyed thread and tat with it.  There wasn't a specific pattern, I would just play around and see what I could come up with.  This is one of the patterns that came from the experience.  The thread used in the picture is from Marilee Rockley and is called Spooky (it's currently in her Etsy shop Yarnplayer).  I know, strange colors to inspire a Christmas tree.

Happy Palmetto Tat Days Everyone!

This weekend many of us are wishing we were in Georgia right now enjoying all that Tatland has to offer.   Palmetto Tat Days like the Christmas in Whoville is stopped by nothing, not huricanes nor covid!  So let's take a moment this weekend to pretend we are at Palmetto Tat Days. 
This is what I suggest:

1. On Saturday wear one of your past tatday shirts (or designate a pretend tatday shirt if you have never attended)

2. Tat a pattern fron tatdays or one written by a past tatday teacher or an UFO from a tatting seminar.

I have added below a pattern for tatted ear savers.   I used size 3 Lizbeth thread for the sample in the picture. You can use any size thread but you will need to add more repeats.  You will also need to make the size of the beads used smaller to fit the rings better.  With Size 3 thread it is easier to add the beads after by sewing them in place but with a smaller thread you may want to add them as you go.

sp- small picot

p- picot

lj- lock join

C- chain

vsp- very small picot

R- ring

 

Materials: 

Size 3 Thread (6 yards in kit)

6 or 8 mm beads

2 buttons

Thread to sew on buttons and beads (not in kit)

 

Wind 3 yards of thread of a shuttle, or if needle tatting normal tail

 

R     5 p 5 vsp 5 p 5

C     5 p 5

*R   5 + (previous ring) 5 vsp 5 p 5

C     5 p 5*

Repeat from * to * until you have 5 rings in total then:

C     7  lj (p on 5^th ring)  7 lj (vsp on closest ring)

C     *5 p 5 lj (vsp on next ring)*

Repeat from * to * across top of rings then

C     7  lj (p on 1st ring)  7 , join to beginning ring.  Hide ends.

 

Now take some thread (I used size 20 thread in a coordinating color)  and sew a button on at the first picot.  Don’t cut the thread, instead run the thread either behind the tatting or through the core of the double stitches to the 1^st picot of the 2^nd ring.   Sew a bead to the middle of the ring by going through the 1^st and 3^rd picots.  Repeat with the next 2 rings.  Finish by sewing the 2^nd button to the last picot on the 5^th ring.  Knot and hide threads.
